Living near Otay Mesa puts you close to one of the busiest land borders in the world, and many residents cross regularly for work, family and shopping. A little planning makes it easier. This guide covers the tools and programs that help, and where to check the latest information.
Check the wait before you go
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) publishes wait times for northbound crossings. Our Border Wait Times page shows the current numbers for Otay Mesa and San Ysidro, and CBP has its own site at bwt.cbp.gov. Waits change through the day and by day of the week, so many commuters check before they leave and pick their crossing and time.
Trusted traveler programs
- SENTRI is CBP's program that gives pre-approved, low-risk travelers expedited clearance and dedicated lanes at southern land border ports. Applicants go through a background check and an in-person interview. Details and the application are on CBP's SENTRI page.
- Ready Lanes are for travelers with RFID-enabled documents, such as a passport card. The lanes and their hours change, so check CBP before you rely on them.
- Lane hours are set by CBP and can change. Confirm current hours before you plan a late or early crossing.

What this means when you choose a home
- Ask how often you will cross, and in which direction, and test the route at the hours you would use it.
- Compare homes by the commute, not only the price: Compare Two Homes turns it into dollars and hours a year.
- If you plan to cross with children, pets or goods, review CBP's rules for each.

General information, not legal, tax or lending advice. Rules, schedules and programs change, so confirm current details with the official source. CBP sets all border procedures and lane hours.
