The History of Otay Mesa: Aviation, Annexation and the Border

How a mesa that once launched gliders became a trade hub and a place with room to grow.

Otay Mesa's story is one of flight and trade. It is the place where early gliders lifted off, where a small airfield opened, and where one of the busiest commercial border crossings now operates.

    The first glider flights

    John J. Montgomery launches gliders from the west rim of Otay Mesa in what are widely described as the first controlled flights in the western hemisphere.

    East Field opens

    The Army establishes an aerial gunnery and aerobatics school on the mesa, first called East Field in honor of Major Whitten J. East.

  4. 1943

    Navy days

    The Navy takes over the airfield, first calling it Otay Mesa and then renaming it Brown Field in honor of Commander Melville S. Brown.

  5. 1946

    Back to local hands

    The Navy decommissions the field and turns it over to San Diego County. It reopens for the Navy in 1951 during the Korean War.

  7. 1957

    Annexed by San Diego

    Otay Mesa and other parts of the South Bay are annexed to the City of San Diego.

  8. 1962

    Brown Field becomes a public airport

    The Navy transfers the airfield to the City of San Diego on the condition that it stays a public airport.

  9. The trade hub
  10. 1983

    The port of entry opens

    The Otay Mesa crossing opens to divert commercial truck traffic from San Ysidro, and it grows into one of the busiest commercial crossings on the border.

    Land opens for growth

    Almost 4,000 more acres are annexed, opening land for industry and new neighborhoods.

  12. 2015

    Cross Border Xpress

    A passenger terminal with a bridge to Tijuana International Airport opens.
